SSD upgrade

The single biggest performance lift for an older Mac. Solid-state storage with the capacity you actually need.

Why an SSD upgrade transforms an older Mac

If your Mac feels sluggish, the cause is almost always the storage drive. A spinning HDD makes the CPU wait for data; an SSD delivers it instantly. Replacing the original HDD with an SSD on a 2011-2015-era iMac, Mac Mini, or MacBook Pro typically turns “feels old and slow” into “feels new”. Boot times go from a minute to ten seconds. Apps that took 20 seconds to open take two.

Which Macs we upgrade

  • iMac (pre-2020): user-serviceable bay; we replace the HDD with an SSD up to 4TB.
  • Mac Mini (pre-2014 and 2018 Intel): SSD upgrade or addition possible. 2014 Mac Mini is limited.
  • MacBook Pro (pre-2016, Intel): internal SSD upgrade. Capacity up to 4TB on most generations.
  • MacBook Air (pre-2017 Intel): SSD upgrade possible on certain models with proprietary connectors.

For Apple silicon Macs (M1, M2, M3, M4) and MacBook Air/Pro 2018+, the SSD is soldered to the logic board and can’t be user-upgraded. We can advise on external SSD options for these models.

What’s involved

  1. Diagnose your current setup: model, drive type, current capacity, OS version
  2. Recommend the right SSD: NVMe vs SATA, capacity to suit your use
  3. Clone your current drive to the new SSD using forensic imaging so nothing is lost
  4. Install, boot from the new SSD, verify performance
  5. Optional: keep your old drive as an external for backup

How we quote

SSD pricing moves with the market. NVMe storage costs have trended down for years but specific Apple-compatible parts vary in availability. We don’t publish fixed prices because what you’d pay today isn’t what you’d pay in six months. Phone us with your Mac model and the capacity you want, and we’ll quote on the call or after a quick diagnostic. The £75 diagnostic fee applies if assessment is needed, deducted from the upgrade cost if you go ahead.

Turnaround

24 hours for most upgrades. Same-day for booked jobs where the drive is in stock.

What you get

  • The right SSD for your model and use case
  • Bit-for-bit cloning of your existing data (nothing lost)
